Sweden´s tradition of strong and innovative design presents the ideal platform for the next generation of young designers to build upon. Design agency Research and Development, the brainchild of Robert Olzon, Daniel Olsson and Jonas Topooco is doing not only that but is pushing the boundaries of design by marrying and applying different disciplines: "I guess you could say that we are interested in creating and developing concepts," says Robert Olzon, "We don´t belive that to be interested in design you have to constrict yourself to one discipline. By experimenting with and combining different areas of design we don´t get bored which makes our work better." Althrough Research and Development was set up only a year ago, after the trio graduated from the graphic design course where they met, the agency has worked on a number of high-profile commissions and exhibitions, including poster designs, bumper films for national television station and sound installations like Invisible Wealth exhibited at Färgfabriken, Stockholm, this summer. "We had five metronomes all set on different beats per minute. It created a pattern that wouldn´t repeat it self in a millon years, we used it as an illustration of the complex patterns that we call chance and the power everyone´s got to change these, and thereby the imagined future." At the moment they are working on a project for Swedish Style in Tokyo, a yearly event which aims to promote swedish lifestyle in Japan. Olzon explains: "Our mission is to develop a foolproof design system, which works independently and is not based on strict systems, rules or grids. Our aim is to develop a system, which is simple and foolproof, regardless of how you use it." In conjunction with the Swedish Style project, Research and Development will be showing a collection of their work at the Sign Gallery in Tokyo this coming October.
